Typically, silica is produced from quartzite, a sandstone that has been metamorphosed and turned into stone, a process called lithification. Using this material results in a silica containing relic grain boundaries. This means that the original fabric of the sandstone can always be seen in the quartzite, leaving small quartzite particles that contribute to inherent weakness in the silica fabric.

MUNROE MATERIALS employs a much different process. We quarry vein quartz that features more robust characteristics. The vein quartz that we produce contains comes out of the ground containing metal particles. Using our proprietary technology, we then proceed to remove those metal impurities resulting in silica that contains little or no oxide. That process facilitates the production of silica with a level of 95% or better purity – and a much stronger, more resilient profile.

To our knowledge we are the only producer of silica from quarried vein quartz.
